Alignment

This video addresses how aligned any staff member is with their organisation's practice and values - and what either can do about it if that happens....

We come to work as two people; our personal and our professional selves/ Our personal self is everything we think of as ourselves, our unique individual identity – or experiences, likes, dislikes, hopes, fears, ambitions, and values. Our professional self is that we display at work, where we are required to deliver principles, practices and behaviours, and values, that are legitimately required of us by the organisation. When the two match then our professional and personal selves are aligned: what the organization wants from us is what we want to give, and what we want to do, and how we want to do it, is exactly what is required by the organization. And alignment is the biggest single predictor of job satisfaction. But this isn’t always the case. Frequently people can find themselves misaligned, where there is a mismatch between what the organization wants, and what the individual wants. There will always be some misalignment – it’s not realistic to expect a perfect match all the time – and most people can accept that. What we’re talking about here is persistent and strong misalignment. Where the disconnect is so strong that the individual no longer wants to work for that organisation.
