Managing Uncertainty
Training Courses
The world is becoming increasingly complex, vulnerable, diverse and uncertain. These three training courses offer ways that may help manage both the uncertainty, and your response to it.
Uncertainty often causes anxiety: think how uncertain we are, compared to 10 years ago, in terms of energy, climate change, health and employment. We like to be more secure, more confident of how things are, and how they will turn out. In this increasingly uncertain world we need strategies to minimise uncertainty, or have less stressful ways of responding to it.

The downsides of uncertainty
Most people focus on the downsides of uncertainty - and we will take a good look at 7 of them, and how to cope effectively with them: anxiety, unpredictability, risk, guesswork, stuck, too many options, and helplessness
The positives of uncertainty
There are upsides too - uncertainty can be a situation that can be taken advantage of. Again we will look at 5 key upsides: agenda setting, opportunity, leadership, control and innovation.
Responding to uncertainty
ARIA is an acronym for the four responses that together are the most typical when faced with uncertainty:
- accept
- reduce or remove
- influence
- adapt

The 90-minute course provides a balance sheet of the pros and cons of uncertainty, and the opportunity to self-assess to see if you have a tendency to adopt one or more of the coping strategies identified. The half day looks at 7 negative and 5 positive responses in more detail, and the full day asks participants to manage a series of work based scenarios which have uncertainty at their core.
Never 'death by powerpoint'
We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.
Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.
'Want more?' resource pack
In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.
My attention can easily wander, but this was never the case here, largely due to the variety of learning approaches used. Never a dull moment!

Managing Uncertainty Frequently Asked Quesitons
How do you manage uncertainty in the workplace?
That's what these training courses are all about: essentially it is a question of choosing then applying the strategy which works best for you or your organisation. What are the key leadership skills in times of uncertainty?
In such times, people often look to leadership for guidance, reassurance and a positive strategy. So this is often a time that exposes the leader and their skills, such as communication and change management, and personal attributes such as honesty and empathy.
Should we just accept uncertainty as a permanent state?
It's probably true that there will always be uncertainty; some of this we can resolve or reduce, and some of which we will have to live with, which means choosing a response that works best for us, as individuals or as an organisation.
Which of these three training courses should I take?
The 90-minute course will give you a comprehensive overview, but without being able to probe any of the options in any great depth; that happens on the half day option, and the full day option devotes the afternoon to asking participants to manage a series of case studies where uncertainty is a dominant factor.
