Assertiveness Workshop Content

What does being assertive mean?

Typically being assertive is compared with being aggressive, or being passive. We will look at what each of these mean, the triggers and behaviours associated with them, and the consequences for those involved.

Principles of assertiveness

What are the key principles that underpin and support assertiveness behaviour and techniques? These provide the context that legitimises assertive behaviour, and also provides the rationale for how, why and when to be assertive.

Owning your response

You cannot control how other people behave; you might be able to influence it, but you can't guarantee to control it. But you can choose your own behaviour in any circumstance; it's often not easy, especially when under pressure, but it can be done.

Boundary Setting

Where are the boundaries in your life - at home or at work? Do you actively set and maintain them? Do some exist that you've never even considered?

Beliefs

Whatever you believe you give yourself permission to achieve...so a large part of being assertive is having the belief that you CAN be assertive. Conversely, if you were to believe you could not behave assertively - then almost certainly you won't. So we'll take a look at any unhelpful beliefs we have in this area, and how to replace or change them into something more positive.

How to be assertive

4 techniques to help you or your staff be appropriately assertive, in a way they feel comfortable with, in a variety of difficult situations...

Consequence assertion

A useful tool to help anyone stand their ground when under belligerent or browbeating pressure... Hopefully you won't need it, but if you do...

Assertiveness Workshop Activities

The shortest (90 minute) course will cover the basic definitions, and the causes and consequences of each of the three behaviours people have when under pressure, and why the ability to be assertive is important. The half-day course will offer a range of assertive techniques, and the full day course will provide the opportunity to further test and develop those techniques through a range of work-related scenarios.

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Assertiveness Courses Frequently Asked Quesitons

Why is being assertive so difficult for some people?

Often it is either a lack of confidence, or a self limiting belief - but it can also be due to lack of skill or technique - all of these will be covered in these training courses.

Why when I try to be assertiveness, does it feel like I'm being aggressive?

Typically someone who is more naturally passive, tends to see assertiveness as 'being aggressive'. Someone who tends to be more aggressive tends to see assertiveness as 'being passive'. So people will have different 'views' about assertiveness depending on their starting position.

What if assertiveness just doesn't work?

There is a technique called 'Consequence Assertion' designed to deal with this, and is covered in depth in these training courses.

Which of these three courses would it be best to attend?

The shortest course outlines three main types of behaviour under pressure, the cause and consequences of these behaviour types, and the key principles of being assertive. The half-day programme then looks in detail at a range of assertive techniques, how to use them, and why they are effective. On the full day programme, the afternoon is given over to repeat testing and devloping the various techniques through a range of work-related scenarios.
